I wish there was a poll option on here.

Brad announced in another post,  https://forums.elementalgame.com/408541/page/2/#2941809 ,  that there will be a future Stardock store for their own stuff, and WOM will be on there.

The question is would you rather purchase a future Stardock game on Impulse, or on a successor to Stardock Central?  This isn't meant to be a slam Gamestop thread, and I hope no one does this.  Even if I'd prefer to buy direct, it doesn't mean I wouldn't use Impulse for other stuff.

Personally- my preference would be to purchase on a future SDC.

Pros:

- purchasing from Stardock means Stardock gets a higher percentage of the money I spend.  This will improve their profitability, and therefore, their future game development

- I believe that purchasing from Stardock means I am less likely to have issues with DRM on my purchase.

- I believe that beta patches will come more quality on Stardock-owned servers

Cons:

- This may make using the features of Impulse more difficult for Stardock in the future, and this may also disable certain Impulse features. *

- Impulse may run sales

* The Impulse features in WOM are quite nice, but I don't feel they add anything important to the game.  I may feel differently if I played a Stardock game in multiplayer- but Stardock would have to make a game with good multiplayer first.

Considering I will NEVER BUY anything from ripoff GAMESTEAL I'd prefer a separate server to download AND BUY ALL STARDOCK games. I don't buy any of that other crap anyways. It will be STARDOCK or NOTHING games for me for now and forever.

I would also buy from STEAM and/or GAMERSGATE, even Direct2Drive but not ever Impulse owned by Gamesteal.

After FE (which I'm not paying for) and Rebellion (which I already bought), it's Steam or bust for me.

on Dec 11, 2011

Neither.. since the new stardock service might grow and be sold off to someone.

I'll take my copy of FE from whichever its offered. But Any new purchases will be from gamers gate or GoG..

I think the new Stardock service would be only programs made by Stardock or published by Stardock.  I think they're trying to avoid being a big DD player this time round.

Yes thats the stated plan, but I'm pretty certain they never planned on selling impulse when they were starting it. I trusted Stardock to manage my digital purchases once and paid for it by having my library of games transferred to gamestop. Its not a mistake I will repeat, regardless of the stated intentions.

Lastly I really don't want to deal with a separate account and or digital download manager for each dev/publisher. Its bad enough I already have my digital purchases split between GoG, Gamersgate, D2D, and Impulse Gamestop.

Edit: Just want to add... if the only thing I had purchased via impulse were stardock products my view may be different. Since I could end my relationship with gamestop and just use stardocks new service. however since I have other games on gamestop i'm stuck in a contractually bound relationship with gamestop that I never wanted in order to access games which I paid for. Which leaves a bad taste in my mouth toward both gamestop and stardock in regards to digital downloads. Had stardock offered me a way to continue to access my previously purchased games without me being forced to deal with and accept gamestops contractual demands I would have taken it and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I avoid steamworks games because they force a contract with a 3rd party service on me, and I view the gamestop situation in the same way. I was forced into a contract with a 3rd party which I didn't want in order to access things which I already paid for. They both leave the consumer with 2 choices.. accept the 3rd parties TOS or accept that the money spent on the games was wasted and give up access to the games which you paid for. Neither should be acceptable from a consumers point of view, and is not an acceptable way to treat people to me.

(really the only reason I even put up with DD is physical copies have become harder and harder to track down and obtain)

Edit 2: None of this is new, but since you either don't remember or never read my wall o' text type diatribes on the subject i figured I'd rehash.

Also, Gamestop probably has language against Stardock running anything they don't develop or publish.

One thing I'm curious about is whether Stardock is going to do any more 2nd party stuff like Sins/Demigod in the future, or just their own developed efforts.

I haven't bought anything off impulse since gamestop got control of it. IMO they are one of the worst companies out there, and I hated to see impulse go to them. As far as Stardock coming out with a new direct download service, I would be surprised if gamestop lets them. At any rate, there are already too many service out there for digital downloads. Steam ftw.

I used Impulse because of Stardock, trusted them a lot, even if I bought some really crappy games, mostly from promising small developers, the point was and is supporting indie games, so I'll buy directly from Stardock

Stardock Central will be for Stardock products (apps/games) only, it's not going to be a 3rd party service like Steam or Impulse.

I would rather purchase future Stardock games from Stardock than from Impulse.
